ANNA MENDELSSOHN [GRACE LAKE]~ Anna Mendelssohn was a British poet, as well as a political activist and artist. Born in Stockport in 1948, her politics were inspired by the student uprisings in Paris in 1968-9. In 1971 she was arrested and convicted of conspiracy to cause explosions as part of The Angry Brigade, a verdict which she always insisted was unjust. She attended the universities of Essex and Cambridge.

Reticent about publishing in her lifetime, she nevertheless consented to the publication of three booklets of her poetry by Cambridge-based press Equipage under the literary pseudonym Grace Lake: Viola Tricolor (1993); Bernache nonnette (1995); Tondo Aquatique (1997). Other publications include La Facciata; Poetical Histories, no.5 (Cambridge, 1988) and Parasol One. Parasol Two. Parasol Avenue (Involution, 2006). In 2000 a full book of Mendelssohn's poetry, Implacable Art, was published by Salt under its 'Folio' imprint and Equipage, under the name 'Anna Mendelssohn'. A later pamphlet, Py, was published by Oystercatcher press in 2009.

Following her death in 2009, her friends were faced with the near-impossible task of retrieving and preserving her papers --an effort which took over six weeks-- the archive has since been moved to the University of Sussex, where it remains unorganised. The publication of these poems, and the accompanying commentary and essay, is part of a larger effort on the part of her friends and readers to uphold the reading of her work.
